Raat Ki Rani: The Scent of Every Lahore Summer Night
Ask anyone who grew up in Pakistan what summer smells like, and there's a good chance they'll say raat ki rani.
It's the smell that finds you after the heat finally breaks. The electricity is gone again, everyone has moved up to the roof with their charpais, somebody's phuppo is telling the same story for the third time, and the chai is getting cold because no one wants to go back downstairs. And then, from a neighbour's wall or a pot in the corner of the courtyard, that soft, sweet fragrance drifts in. Nobody mentions it. Everybody notices it.

A flower that only speaks at night
Raat ki rani, the queen of the night, is shy during the day. You'd walk right past it. It's only after dark that the tiny white flowers open up and fill the air, which is probably why it belongs so completely to summer evenings in our minds. It isn't a scent you go looking for. It's one that arrives when you're finally still enough to notice it.
When we sat down to make this candle, we didn't want a perfume version of the flower. We wanted the whole evening. So we started with night-blooming jasmine, softened it with a little orange blossom in the middle, and let it settle into a warm base of musk, the way the night air settles once the day's heat is gone. It stays light. It never shouts. It just sits in the room with you, like a good memory does.
Why we pour it by hand
Every Raat Ki Rani candle is poured by hand in Lahore, using 100% soy wax. We chose soy because it burns slower and cleaner, which means the scent lasts longer and fills the room gently instead of all at once. If you're curious about the difference, we wrote about it in why we only use soy wax.
But honestly, the reason we pour by hand is simpler than that. A scent this personal deserves to be made slowly.
Where it lives best
It's lovely in the bedroom before you sleep, on a side table during a quiet evening with a book, or in a new home abroad when you're missing the one you left behind. It's the kind of candle you pack carefully between your clothes when you want to take a little bit of home with you.
It comes in our amber jar Signature Series in 3.5 and 8.5 fl. oz, and in the Old Classics glass jar if you prefer the original look that started it all. The smaller jar gives you roughly 17 to 21 hours of burn time, perfect for a bedside or as a gift. The larger ones are made for living rooms and long winter evenings when you need summer back for a while.
A small promise to your candle
The first time you light it, let it burn until the melted wax reaches the edges of the jar. It sounds like a small thing, but it sets the candle's memory, and every burn after that will follow the same path. Trim the wick a little before you relight it, keep it away from the fan, and it will look after you for a long time.
